What's a Docent?? Webster's -"Doe-scent: a person who leads guided tours, especially through a museum or art gallery" If you are interested in helping CSC with a fun fund raising event, meeting new folks, and helping visitors understand the leather/fetish scene, respond by email and get on the list. Please put Docent in the subject line. We are asking that you have attended at least 2 Folsom Street Fairs in the past, know something of the culture -- and it's a plus, but not recommended, that you have an appropriate outfit to wear. We are asking for a commitment to attend at least one training class, and to spend at least 2 hours with your clients at the Fair. If you are multi-lingual, let us know and we might make someone's event even more special. Docents will commit to leading at least one Fair tour -- if you have lots of energy, you can do as many as three. We encourage a tour to last about 2 hours, since there's a lot to see (and explain) at the Folsom Street Fair! You may give the tour to an individual, a couple, or even a small group. Docent clients will include but aren't limited to people who: 1. Would like to attend, but are shy, nervous, and reluctant without some good old fashioned hand-holding. 2. Amy Jo Goddard, M.A. For the past year, I have been conducting research on sex offender laws and their effect on people and our society. Last Saturday, I gave a presentation on this research at the Los Angeles Social Forum. Preliminary results of the research are presented at www.ennex.com/external/RSOL/doc/topics.htm. The most horrible thing I have been finding is the harmful effects of these laws on children and adolescents, including prosecution of juveniles for consensual sexual activity with each other. We have children as young as 11 years old on the sex offender registry. A new phase of this research has begun in which I am conducting interviews with people who engaged in consensual sexual activity when they were children and/or adolescents. This could include anything from innocently "playing doctor" as a young child to having sex with your sweetheart in high school. Two interviews have been conducted to date and several more are currently scheduled. Several dozen interviews or more will be conducted before the project is complete. I will be traveling to the Bay Area in mid-August for one interview that is currently scheduled, and I would be interested in conducting other interviews on that trip. If you were involved in any kind of consensual sexual activity before the age of 18, please contact me ASAP to discuss it with complete confidentiality. If you do not know me, I can provide references that can vouch for my trustworthiness. If you know someone else who was involved in consensual sexual activity before the age of 18, feel free to forward this e-mail to them. HAI participation is not required. Background and Procedure of the Interviews I am conducting a series of interviews with people who engaged in consensual sexual activity when they were children and/or adolescents, either with other youth or with adults. The purpose of this research is to test the commonly accepted hypothesis that such activity is universally a traumatic experience. The purpose is not to deny or minimize the trauma of child sexual abuse, but to investigate the possibility of children and adolescents for whom sexual activity is not necessarily experienced that way. If you were (or are) engaged in consensual sexual activity before the age of 18, I'd like to talk with you and discuss the possibility of an interview. Also, if you know someone else who might qualify and wish to tell his or her story, I'd appreciate if you would discuss it with them and/or forward this e-mail to them and ask if they'd like to think about contacting me. The interview is typically conducted in your home when you are alone and free to speak privately without interruption. The length of the interview is entirely up to you, as long as you wish to talk. The interview is recorded to allow me to accurately reflect your story. All information you give me is held as strictly confidential unless you specifically tell me otherwise. Anything I write based on your story will be sent to you for review and further comment before publication. The intention is to publish a collection of stories, anonymized as necessary, in a book, website, and/or series of magazine articles. Rory Root, giant of the comics industry and friend to gazillions of us, passed away on Monday 5/19/08, following emergency hernia surgery over the weekend. I was fortunate to be able to be with him in ICU all night on Sunday; his family & friends made sure that he was not alone at any time. He never woke after surgery, but I believe that he knew we were there for him. The family has not yet decided about a memorial event and so forth; if you wish to be kept informed, please let me know via email (kathleenhunt@uniquelaw.com). Rory's comic bookstore, Comic Relief, has a terrific memorial website up at the moment (www.comicrelief.net); if you're in the area, stop in and buy a book in Rory's memory. And then there's the personal side of this for me. Rory Root was my friend. Yes, he was a comics visionary and an inveterate gamer, but the most important thing to me was that he was my friend. Sure, he loved comics and books and games, but that wasn't all. He was so much more than that. Memories of him clamor for attention - which to choose? The times we went to a Mexican restaurant in Oakland (now long gone), so we could tease my sister about her flirtation with the waiter? We planned our trips - once or twice a week at that point - around the waiter's schedule, then he and I gleefully dissected their every interaction. She squirmed and blushed and protested - until we got home afterwards, and the three of us would set a date for the next time. Maybe I should write about his affection for cats, like Pia, the cat he'd rescued from a Berkeley pet store to be our first Comic Relief mascot and who became queen of the place for 16 years. Rory was just like the Chinese emperor in the story, the one who would cut off his sleeve rather than disturb the cat sleeping on it. He adored his cat Oolong for every one of the twenty-three years she had him, but there was plenty of love left in his heart for Shelby, the stray that adopted him. Or perhaps it's the way I waited for his first taste of chopped liver every year at Passover; I could always count on him to tell me if it was right, or if I'd overcooked it again. Other people would be polite or tactful: Rory would be honest. He knew it was a trait I cherished. In that same spirit, I'll be honest here: Rory and I didn't always get along easily, especially during the time I worked with him (and later, for him) in my teens and twenties. He drove me absolutely crazy sometimes, and I know he felt the same way about me. We're both - we were both - opinionated people, perfectionist to a fault, often sure of ourselves when we have least reason to be. We both like - liked - to have the last word, and we both had plenty to say on any given topic. And stubborn . . . well, he was stubborn. Me, I was just a little obstinate. Yeah, yeah, that's it, just a little obstinate. (I can hear his voice saying that last sentence, the smile in his voice even coloring the accent he'd put on.) Anyway, it's not surprising that we would clash, with so much in common. It didn't really matter, though. No matter how annoyed we were with each other, we always knew that it had nothing to do with our friendship. Nearly all of our visits and conversations ended with expressed affection on both sides, whether or not we'd been passionately "debating" a topic ten minutes earlier. (Actually, come to think of it, we hardly fought at all in the last ten years - maybe we both grew up a little?) He knew I loved him, and he loved me. I'll always be glad of that. Rory introduced me to more than I can possibly list: new people, new foods, new games, new music, new books . . . there were always new books. I'm reasonably well-read, but I could never keep up with Rory. Actually, I remember how thrilled I was, four or five years ago, when I actually discovered a new book series before him. I lent it to him, of course; he laughed to see me puffing up with pride, but there was affection and understanding under the amusement. In Rory's memory, I will drink hot tea (his favorite beverage, carried everywhere in an enormous mug) and wine (which he always supplied for festive occasions). I'll eat . . . what? Maybe a blueberry ring, like the one he always brought to the shop on Christmas Day; or Indian food, from his favorite Indian restaurant in Berkeley; or perhaps just some dark chocolate and sharp cheeses, his favorites among the many foods he loved. For 33 years, Rory has been part of my life. At Thanksgiving, at Passover, at the store, at home . . . and now, as another dear friend put it, there's "a Rory-sized empty space." I miss you, dear friend. While I'm listening to your Celtic music, or watching (yes, finally!) your favorite TV show The Wire, I offer this - these halting words of my own, and then some, written by someone a lot more eloquent than me: Dirge Without Music I am not resigned to the shutting away of loving hearts in the hard ground. We're writing to inform you that Jwala is having a really tough time right now and needs emergency love and support. Jwala has had a serious back injury-a herniated disc. She has gone to eight doctors, tried all kinds of treatments and sadly she's still in pain. The back injury has had a domino effect in her life. The pain makes it impossible for her to do many of the kinds of work she used to which is causing financial hardships. Then friends she was renting her home from, moved-- so she had to move out too. Now she can't afford the deposit and last month rent needed for a new place. This has all put her on an emotional roller coaster; she's having panic attacks aggravated by sleep apnea. CANDYE KANE BEING TREATED FOR CANCER, NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT (CSC will do a benefit for her soon!) "Cancelled my European Tours and scheduled surgery for April 18th. It was an agonizing decision but I decided I had to cancel my european shows and my appearance on the blues caravan tour for the time being. I will endure the whipple procedure (pancreatic duodectomy) on april 18th at UCSD Thornton Hospital. I will be in the hospital for two weeks minimum. The address for the hospital is : 9300 Campus Point Drive, La Jolla Ca 92037. It was a very difficult decision to cancel this tour. So many people depend on me for their income and so many people worldwide just wanted to see me sing. But I will sing again and by doing this surgery early, I have a better chance of recovering quickly and thus being able to do my other shows later this summer. I am feeling great and this extra time at home will allow me to continue my juicing and exercise and get in optimum shape before I endure this very radical surgery. Thanks so much to those of you who wrote me kind and sometimes funny emails encouraging me to stay at home. The permission slips you sent were hilarious! I have already lost 20 pounds as a result of my dietary changes and will be lose probably another 50 pounds from this intense operation. I am sure I will be fine and will be in better shape than ever. I am already thinking about the activism I will embrace when I am well; for the health care that should be available to all of us regardless of our economic status. Poor peoples lives are worth as much as rich peoples and if I hadnt had a child under 21 and been eligible for partial pay medi-cal, if I hadnt had generous friends, fans and family who are helping, I wouldnt even be able to have cancer surgery and would just be sent home to die! This isnt right and I will fight to publicize this issue. Right now though, I just have to fight to get better and beat cancer and survive this surgery. I am strong and I can do it. I just know it. (i.e. no producers, furniture builders, photographers, etc.) TRANSSEXUAL/TRANSGENDER SURVEY I am writing to ask for your help with what will be the largest non-clinical study of the lives of transgender people in the U.S. (in the first ten days, we have had more than 600 participants, and are aiming for more than 2,000). While much has been written about individual transgender experiences, there has been little trans-positive research on the processes by which people come to see themselves as MTFs, FTMs, crossdressers, genderqueers, and other transgender and gender diverse identities. The researchers are a genderqueer college administrator (me!) and a queer campus diversity specialist (full bios are below). We are undertaking this study because we feel that high school and college administrators, therapists, doctors, and other professionals who work with transgender people often have a limited understanding of transgender experiences, which leads to poor treatment and discrimination. We hope that our findings will help foster a greater awareness of transgender people.
